She is a nine-time Emmy Award Winner, a 21 year anchorwoman at WGN TV, an international journalist veteran, a well-respected public speaker and a community builder. Payne was a reporter and anchor at WGN-TV, CW’s cable station in Chicago. Payne was co-anchor for WGN Midday news from 11 a.m.-1 pm. She left WGN TV after 21 years. Payne Productions, Incorporated is owned by Payne. This television production company also helps students who are interested in the broadcasting industry. Payne continues to broadcast through her freelance work.
Payne was granted a leave from WGN TV in December 2010 to rest her vocal chords. Greg Caputo (news director at WGN-TV), told Robert Feder, TimeOut Chicago columnist, that Payne was diagnosed with cancer a few months back and had tried to fight it off. . . But, her doctor has asked her to remain off the air until they can resolve the problem.
On her blog on August 4, 2011, Payne added: “Down the road, I plan to begin producing my own documentaries. I also plan to produce occasional reports which I will share with you on this website. WGN-TV announced in November 2008 that Payne would be taking an indefinite leave due to ongoing health problems.
